Ms Wanda is a website dedicated to sustainable fashion and has great reputation through this segment. Looking around, this heart felt copy got our attention and it is being shared from their content as food for our thoughts…

“The last few days have really been an unbelievable time, especially those in cities effected by the England riots. The head scratching and soul searching has been rampant. I too have been trying to make sense of what has been going on around me, and started to wonder whether there are similarities with what we see in fast fashion consumerism.

We will never probably discover one reason why it happened, because everyone’s motivation was different. Indeed what we saw initially in Tottenham was different from what we saw later in Manchester. However what these events do seem to have in common is people’s inability to see the consequences of their actions, or even to have empathy towards others affected by their actions.

We saw examples of this on Twitter. Early on Tuesday morning one young tweeter bragged about her loot, but when the Twitter mob set on her (an equally unpleasant group I should add) and then others started sending her details to the @ukmetpolice Twitter account, with the hashtag #tweetalooter, she clearly started panicking. She tweeted: “I realise what I did was wrong but I can’t take it back now.” Minutes later her account was deleted.

This type of disconnection is of course something we see all the time in fast fashion. People are disconnected from production, manufacturer, and supply chains. We have no idea where our clothes come from, how they are made, what happens to the people who make them. We are also disconnected from the retailers – we have little idea about who the people are who sell us our clothes, how they get treated by their managers, what would happen to them if they tried to start a union, for example.

Even when we are exposed to it we quite often disassociate ourselves from it. When I started getting interested in ethical fashion I would talk to (certain) friends about it. They’d appear interested and sympathetic and then a few days later would invite me to go to Primark with them, like the conversation never happened.

At the more extreme end, I was following an online forum the other day after a programme about sweat shops and fast fashion. Someone summed up the spirit of many consumers today when they posted: “I don’t care about sweat shops or any of that stuff. I just love shopping.”

It occurred to me that there was a similar mentality in the looters of the past few days. The society we now live in, with it’s huge global chains, faceless brands and powerful advertising, allows us to disconnect ourselves from the reality. It numbs us to any suffering created to give us what we want. I’m not saying that we used to live in a world full of respect. Certainly the Victorians didn’t have much truck with the rights of children, and don’t even get me started on the rights of post-war women in the workplace. But certainly I think this disconnected consumerism is something new, and may possibly lay at the heart of the troubles we have seen this week in our communities.”

….amazon rainforest rare tribes

After the first breaking news few months ago, the rare indigenous group of tribal people are still under the spot light.

Sheltered in thick vegetation, the tribe may have been left undisturbed for hundreds of years.
Meirelles, the Brazil’s Indian Affairs department (FUNAI) representative, states to be monitoring this tribe for the last 20 years and discloses they know so little about them, that it was difficult to convince even the government that they exist.

The Brazilian government has been a full supporter in securing the habitat for known and unknown indigenous groups, mainly to guarantee their protection and keep respecting their natural tribal group’s way of life, avoiding illegal activities related to hunting, fishing logging, mining, drug trafficking, oil exploration, etc.

Survival has been authorized by the Brazilian government to use the below footage as part of its campaign and Caipora is happy to be sharing it with you:
