Probably one of the most popular reasons why do women wear jewellery on their fingers is because it’s part of a social experiment. If you were to ask a group of people to describe themselves, how would they put it best? A pretty well dressed woman, maybe? Or a pretty well dressed woman, but with a jewel on her finger?
Most people probably have a general idea of what they think a pretty well dressed woman is. They probably also have an image of a pretty well dressed woman at least in their mind. So for social experiment they experiment by wearing a diamond bracelet on their right hand. Of course, they do this in a very public place and some passersby notice it, but only for the moment.
A different group of people might be completely unaware of why do women wear jewellery on their fingers. For these people they might imagine the wearer as a rich and famous person. The wearer might be someone from the entertainment business, perhaps. Perhaps she is a celebrity, or works in the film industry. Or she could be a politician, a rugby player or a member of the royal family.
In each case the social experiment is the same. To test the social experiment, the participants are asked a question about why do women wear jewellery on their fingers. Then some of them are given a simple ring, some are given expensive diamond jewellery, and some are given nothing. Then they are asked why they chose to wear jewellery, and how much money they would be prepared to pay for a new set if they won a lottery.
The answer to the question ‘why do women wear jewellery on their fingers?’ is much the same for each group of participants. And so too is the answer to the other two questions. Each participant is simply trying to play out in their own minds the response that each person would give if they won a lottery. But all this means that when it comes to why do women wear jewellery on their fingers, the answers do not always follow the usual.
In the case of wearing rings on the right hand, the answer might be that many women find themselves having difficulty getting the finger to stay still long enough to get a good rhythm. They find themselves reaching out for a wristwatch to help them keep time. When a jeweller puts a ring on the left hand’s fourth finger, though, they find that they can more easily keep time without the aid of jewellery. This is probably because the positioning of the little finger makes it easier for women to feel when they are doing things correctly, whether it be with a watch or with a handbag.
In the case of wearing earrings on the left hand, the answer may simply be that there are not many women who like the idea of having dangling earrings hanging from their fingers. Some women have a habit of pushing the earrings away from their ears with their purse, for fear of accidentally chomping them on the sidewalk or in the trash. In the case of wearing earrings on the right hand, though, wearing earrings on the right hand may simply be as awkward as wearing them on the left, but there is no reason to ditch the jewellery altogether. Instead, some women wear jewellery on their right hands while they wear earrings on the left, an approach that gives them a nice look (though it does occasionally cause problems as well).
